The solution. In our case, we developed a mapping framework, vgMapper, using standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) as the graphics file format. This XML-based file format and development language enables us to dynamically create high-quality, data-driven vector graphics. Using vgMapper we have complete flexibility to deliver exactly what our end-users are looking for. This includes specific map functionality and the visual rendering of the information. All that is required to use vgMapper is a SVG viewer available at no cost from several third parties. We have optimized the storage of map data for efficient rendering of SVG data and can deploy solutions where data is stored in an open format within either Oracle or SQL2000.
